On April 14th, a briefing on the National People’s Congress (NPC) and the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) was held at the Commissioner’s Office for consular missions in Hong Kong. Commissioner Cui Jianchun along with one Hong Kong deputy to the NPC and four members of the CPPCC, namely Mr. Martin Liao Cheung-kong, member of the Standing Committee of the National Committee of the CPPCC, Member of the Executive Council of the Hong Kong SAR and Chairman of the Hong Kong Jockey Club, Dr. Jonathan Choi Koon-shum, member of the Standing Committee of the National Committee of the CPPCC and Chairman of Chairman of Sunwah Group, Mr. Ronick Chan Chun-ying, deputy to the NPC, Chairman of the House Committee of the Legislative Council of Hong Kong and Member of the Legislative Council, Dr. Thomas So Shiu-tsung, members of the National Committee of the CPPCC and member of the Legislative Council, and Prof. Vivian Wing-Wah Yam, member of the National Committee of the CPPCC, vice-president of the University of Hong Kong, and member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, delivered keynote speeches from different perspectives. Consuls General and Acting Consuls General from 44 countries attended the briefing.

Commissioner Cui focused on China’s foreign policy, introducing it from six aspects: China as a strong force for peace, a contributor to global governance, a driver for major-country cooperation, a guardian of regional stability, a partner to the Global South, and a champion of openness and cooperation. He said that Hong Kong would play a greater role in integrating into and contributing to China’s high-standard opening up and mutually beneficial cooperation with the world.

Hong Kong deputy to the NPC and members of the CPPCC respectively briefed on the National Two Sessions from a macro perspective and from professional angles such as trade, finance, law and technology, based on their personal experience from attending the Two Sessions and the actual situation of Hong Kong. After the briefing, Commissioner Cui and the Hong Kong deputy and members held a discussion with foreign Consuls General.

The Consuls General responded positively by saying the briefing innovative in form and rich in content, and that the event helped them better understand the outcomes of the Two Sessions this year and the 15th Five-Year Plan. They expressed their commitment to continue to leverage the unique advantages of Hong Kong to further strengthen cooperation with China and Hong Kong.
