Commissioner’s Office Urges Certain Foreign Media to Take Off Biased Lens and Stop Misleading Narratives on Hong Kong

The spokesperson of the Commissioner’s Office of the Chinese Foreign Ministry in the Hong Kong SAR expressed strong condemnation to distorted reports, commentaries, and editorials published by certain foreign media outlets, including BBC Chinese and Nikkei, which deliberately smeared the Hong Kong National Security Law on its the fifth anniversary and discredited the successful practice of “one country, two systems” in Hong Kong. The spokesperson urged the relevant media to:

First, respect facts, not lies. Since the implementation of the National Security Law, Hong Kong society has regained stability, citizens have enjoyed peaceful lives, and economic development has returned to the right track. Today, Hong Kong ranks as the world’s freest economy, maintains its position as a top-three global financial hub, and has reclaimed its spot among the world’s top three most competitive economies. These facts are the strongest proof of the effectiveness of the National Security Law.

Second, uphold fairness, not double standards. National security legislation is common international practice, and the countries where these media’s parent companies operate have even stricter national security legal frameworks. Yet, while being conspicuously quiet about their own national security laws, these outlets maliciously attack the Hong Kong National Security Law, which once again exposed their hypocrisy and double standards.

Third, maintain integrity, not misleading narratives. Ignoring facts and distorting the truth, the relevant media smeared the Hong Kong SAR’s legitimate law enforcement actions. By creating “victim” images for fugitive offenders through interviews, these media outlets are essentially giving a platform to anti-China forces. The political motives behind are obvious. These media should adhere to journalistic ethics, stop spreading false narratives about Hong Kong, and report Hong Kong objectively and fairly.

Hong Kong is part of China, and no external interference or slander will succeed! With the central government’s support and the joint efforts of Hong Kong society, Hong Kong will continue to write a new chapter of success under “one country, two systems” and embrace an even more prosperous and stable future.
