On May 8th,  the Global Mediation Summit was held at the Hong Kong, hosted by the International Organization for Mediation (IOMed). Attendees included Hon John KC Lee, Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR); Mr Cui Jianchun, Commissioner of the Office of China’s Foreign Ministry in the HKSAR; Teresa CHENG, Secretary-General of the IOMed; The Hon Paul LAM Ting-kwok, the Secretary for Justice of the HKSAR, served as officiating guests and delivered speeches. Mr. QI Dahai, Director General of the Department of Treaty and Law of China’s Foreign Ministry; H.E. Willy BETT , Vice-Chairperson of the IOMed Governing Council and the Ambassador of Kenya to China, attended and delivered keynote speeches. Representatives from 26 member states of the IOMed attended the event, including Cambodia and Pakistan. Over 1,400 people participated in the event, including internationally renowned mediators, legal and academic representatives.

In his remarks, Commissioner Cui stated that in a world marked by transformation, turbulence and ongoing conflicts, peaceful means including litigation, arbitration and mediation, should be the primary options for settling disputes. He shared three observations on mediation—a unique and valuable means of peaceful dispute settlement.

First, mediation is centered on the parties to a dispute, and it ensures party autonomy through free choice. Second, mediation is supported by mediators, and it delivers win-win outcomes through professional services. Third, mediation is led by member states, and it practices international rule of law through multilateral consensus.

Commissioner Cui emphasized that the IOMed is the world’s first intergovernmental legal organization dedicated exclusively to settling international disputes and commercial disputes through mediation. It is an innovative initiative in international rule of law and has great significance in the history of international relations.

As the initiator and host country of the IOMed, China will, as always, support its development, and give a boost to the building of a community with a shared future for humanity.
