On May 9, 2025, Commissioner Cui Jianchun attended the opening ceremony of the Consulate General of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay in Hong Kong S.A.R. Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Mr John Lee, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Uruguay Mr Mario Lubetkin,Ambassador of Uruguay to China Mr Fernando Lugris, Consul-General of Uruguay to Hong Kong S.A.R. Mr Federico Lage and consuls general of some other countries in Hong Kong S.A.R. also attended the event.
Commissioner Cui extended his warmest congratulations on the official opening of the Consulate on behalf of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China. Cui said that in recent years, China-Uruguay relations have maintained healthy and stable development, serving as a model of unity and cooperation between countries with different political systems and economic scales. In advancing the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation on the new journey, China will adhere to high-level opening-up and deliver more benefits to the world including Uruguay with its high-quality development. Uruguay’s opening of a consulate in Hong Kong S.A.R. is a right choice grounded in today and focused on tomorrow. It will surely promote the high-level development of China-Uruguay relations and practical cooperation as well as people-to-people exchanges between Hong Kong S.A.R. and Uruguay.

Chief Executive Mr John Lee said that opening of the Consulate General of Uruguay in Hong Kong S.A.R. will forge closer trade relations between Hong Kong S.A.R. and Uruguay and underline the long-term promise of the economic prospects and people-to-people ties between both sides.
Minister of Foreign Affairs of Uruguay Mr Mario Lubetkin fully affirmed the unique status and advantages of Hong Kong S.A.R. as a "super connector" and "super value-adder", and said that Uruguay’s opening of a consulate in Hong Kong S.A.R. carries critical importance, which will significantly enhance exchanges and cooperation between Uruguay and Hong Kong S.A.R.in economic, trade, cultural, and people-to-people sectors, and make new contributions to Uruguay-China relations.
