Commissioner’s Office: high-standard rule of law in Hong Kong is irrefutable
2024-06-17 10:33

The spokesperson of the Commissioner’s Office of the Chinese Foreign Ministry in the HKSAR expressed strong disapproval andcondemnation to an opinion piece of former British non-permanent Judge Jonathan Sumption of the Court of Final Appeal of the HKSAR after his resignation that smeared Hong Kongs rule of law and irresponsiblecomments made by a few British politicians that discredited Hong Kong's national security laws.

The spokesperson pointed out that playing the "judge card" to denigrate the rule of law in the SAR is a consistent despicable trick used by the British side to interfere in Hong Kong affairs and damage the full and accurate implementation of "one country, two systems". In March 2022, the British side used the so-called "democracy" and "human rights" as an excuse to "recall" two British non-permanent judges of the Court of Final Appeal of the HKSAR, staging a self-humiliating political farce. This time, contrary to the position laid out in two previous opinion pieces to defend himself as a non-permanent judge of the Court of Final Appeal of the SAR, Jonathan Sumption openly betrayed the professional ethics and the spirit of the rule of law, made irresponsiblecomments on national securitycases in Hong Kong, and smeared the rule of law in the SAR. The reason behind such a change of attitude is self-evident. Some anti-China politicians in the UK have taken the opportunity to make a noise, which has exposed their dark mentality ofdisrupting Hong Kong.

The spokesperson stressed that the formulation and implementation of Hong Kongsnational security law and the Safeguarding National SecurityOrdinance are fully in line with international law and the common practice of various countries, fully draw lessons from the judicial practices of other common law countries, fully respect and protect human rights, and thepositive effect is obvious to all. What really undermines the rule of law in Hong Kong are precisely those external intervention forces that keep saying that they "safeguard the rule of law" and "protect human rights". They have flagrantly violated the principles of international law and the basic norms governing international relations, wantonly smeared the laws of Hong Kong's national security and the judicial system of the SAR, and even openly intimidated and threatened to sanction the judges and prosecutors of the SAR. This has already caused outrage from all walks of life in Hong Kong for running counter to international fairness and justice.

The spokesperson stressed that Hong Kong is part of China and Hong Kong affairs are purely China's internal affairs. External intervention cannot shake the foundation of the rule of law in Hong Kong and the confidence of the international community in the rule of law in Hong Kong, cannot shake the determination of the Chinese side to firmly safeguard "one country, two systems" and national security, and cannot stop the historical trend of Hong Kong moving from chaos to stability and prosperity. We urgethe relevant British politicians and Jonathan Sumption to face the reality squarely, recognize the general trend, reflect on themselves, and immediately stop despicable political manipulation, otherwise they will only humiliate themselves.
