Commissioner’s Office urges the US Consul General in Hong Kong to recognize the reality, put himself in the right position, and return to the right path of promoting the healthy and stable development of China-US relations

The spokesperson of the Commissioner’s Office of the Chinese Foreign Ministry in the HKSAR firmly rejected and strongly condemned US Consul General (CG) Gregory May’s irresponsible comments on Hong Kong SAR’s judicial cases at the online seminar of the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS). The CG openly supported anti-China elements including Jimmy Lai, and meddled in Hong Kong affairs and China’s internal affairs.

The spokesperson said that the Chinese Government has always comprehensively, accurately and unswervingly implemented the principles of "one country, two systems" and "Hong Kong people administering Hong Kong with a high degree of autonomy”. Over the past 27 years since Hong Kong’s return to the motherland, Hong Kong has achieved universally recognized success in the practice of "one country, two systems". With the Hong Kong National Security Law and the Safeguarding National Security Ordinance, Hong Kong's political democracy has been continuously improved, freedom and human rights have been fully protected, economic development has rebounded steadily, and society is in harmony. At the same time, Hong Kong judiciary conducted fair trials and held a small group of anti-China elements accountable in accordance with the law to eliminate the hidden dangers of national security, which is legitimate and necessary.

The spokesperson pointed out that some anti-China organizations and politicians in the West hold the grudge over Hong Kong’s change from chaos to stability and prosperity. In the name of academic discussion, they intervened and smeared the political democracy, judicial justice, human rights and freedom in Hong Kong, which is neither objective nor fair. At present, Hong Kong has opened a chapter of good governance and entered a new stage of focusing on economy and development. Any external intervention will be futile. We urge the US side to recognize the reality as soon as possible, put it in the right position, refrain from flip-flopping, being provocative and crossing the lines, and return to the right path of promoting the healthy and stable development of China-US relations with actions.
