Commissioner’s Office: Chinese people will not flinch from US intimidation

The spokesperson of the Commissioner’s Office of the Chinese Foreign Ministry in the HKSAR strongly disapproved and firmly rejected the so-called “Hong Kong Sanctions Act” introduced by a few US congressmen, which clamored for sanctions against dozens of HKSAR government officials, judges and prosecutors.

The spokesperson said that over the past three years, under the national security law and the new electoral system, different social sectors in the HKSAR have made great efforts to safeguard national security, and Hong Kong has returned to security and stability and has moved from chaos to stability and prosperity. The actions of people from all walks of life in the SAR to safeguard national security are natural and necessary. They have won the support of the people in Hong Kong and whole China, and brook no foreign interference.

The spokesperson pointed out that some US politicians have ignored the fact that Hong Kong is back on the right track and the basic norms of international relations, disregarded the rule of law and judicial independence, and repeatedly tried to impose unreasonable unilateral sanctions on Hong Kong. Their calls for sanctions against judges and other SAR personnel who are just fulfilling their statutory duties fully exposed their hegemonic nature and their ulterior motive to disrupt Hong Kong.

The spokesperson stressed that the sustained success of “one country, two systems” and the trend of Hong Kong moving towards greater prosperity and stability will not change and no sanctions can stop it. The Chinese people, including the people of Hong Kong are unswerving in their determination to safeguard national sovereignty, security, and development interests, and they will not flinch from any sanctions or threats. Rather, intimidation will only make Chinese people more  united and courageous. We urge the relevant politicians in the United States to recognize the facts, stop interfering in Hong Kong affairs and China’s internal affairs, give up the wishful thinking of “using Hong Kong to contain China”, and not go further down the wrong path, otherwise they will only find their tricks failed again and again!
