Commissioner’s Office: it will be counterproductive for the US to use Hong Kong to contain China through intimidation

The spokesperson for the Commissioner’s Office of the Chinese Foreign Ministry in the HKSAR strongly condemned and firmly rejected the so-called “Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (HKETO) Certification Act” put forward by a few anti-China US congressmen, which was passed by the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee on July 13 and will be submitted to the full Senate for a vote. The Act wantonly smeared “one country, two systems”, clamored for the abolition of the privileges and immunities of the HKETO in the United States and even the closure of the Office, and grossly interfered in Hong Kong affairs and China’s internal affairs. We urge the United States to immediately pull back from the brink and stop advancing the Act.


The spokesperson said that since Hong Kong’s return to the motherland, the principles of “one country, two systems”, "Hong Kong people administering Hong Kong" and “Hong Kong enjoying a high degree of autonomy” have been effectively implemented, and the lawful rights and freedoms enjoyed by Hong Kong residents have been fully protected. Hong Kong has a solid position as an international financial, shipping and trading center, and enjoys rapid development of innovative and technological industries, great freedom and openness, and a world-class business environment. Hong Kong’s original laws, including the common law, have been maintained and improved, and the achievements in the practice of “one country, two systems” are globally recognized.


The spokesperson pointed out that at present, Hong Kong has entered a new stage of prosperity and good governance, and Hong Kong citizens live a better life. International investors have cast a vote of confidence in Hong Kong’s development with actions. Hong Kong is the largest source of trade surplus in the United States and an important place for American enterprises to invest and do business. As overseas economic and trade organizations set up by the HKSAR Government, HKETOs have run smoothly, which is win-win to the economic and trade cooperation between Hong Kong and relevant countries and regions. Ignoring the aspirations of the Hong Kong people for stability, progress and development, and disregarding the common interests of the international community in Hong Kong, a small number of politicians in the United States have deliberately concocted ill-intended acts and laws involving Hong Kong, and politicized economic and trade issues to serve their own political gains, which shows US’s real intention to use Hong Kong to curb China, and exposed US’s hegemonic nature.


The spokesperson stressed that no stigma and pressure can stop the historical trend of Hong Kong’s better governance and greater prosperity, nor will it delay Hong Kong’s firm pace of integrating into the overall national development. It will be counterproductive if US politicians insist on pushing forward the relevant Act, because it will damage US’s own interests and credibility. China will never accept any bullying acts of threats and intimidation, and will take strong measures to safeguard its sovereignty, security and development interests.
