Commissioner’s Office urges a few European Parliamentarians to stop vilifying the national security law or using Hong Kong to contain China

The spokesperson for the Commissioner’s Office of the Chinese Foreign Ministry in the HKSAR strongly disapproved and firmly rejected the move of some members of the European Parliament pressuring the President of the European Commission on the third anniversary of the National Security Law for the HKSAR. The parliamentarians wantonly smeared the national security law, and openly clamored for sanctions against Chinese officials, including the HKSAR Government officials, which interfered in Hong Kong affairs and China’s internal affairs.

The spokesperson pointed out that in the three years since the implementation of the national security law, Hong Kong’s public order has been restored, the rule of law and justice upheld, and the extensive lawful rights and freedoms enjoyed by Hong Kong residents effectively safeguarded. International investors enjoy a safer and more stable and predictable business environment. Facts have proved that the law protects national security, social stability, and wins the strong support of the people. It helps Hong Kong to move from chaos to stability and prosperity, and safeguards Hong Kong’s prosperity and stability. In disregard of facts and will of the people, some members of the European Parliament slandered the national security law, and attempted to harm the law-based administration of the HKSAR, which fully exposed their sinister motive for disrupting Hong Kong.

The spokesperson pointed out that in recent years, Europe itself has many social problems in human rights, freedom, and the rule of law, especially political polarization, the rich and the poor chasm, violations of the rights of immigrants, xenophobia, racism, and ignorance of people’s rights to economic, social, cultural development. Instead of solving problems in Europe, these politicians pointed a finger at China’s just actions to safeguard national security and Hong Kong’s prosperity and stability, which smacks heavily of hegemony and double standard.

The spokesperson stressed that on issues related to national sovereignty, security and development interests, the bottom line of “one country, two systems” shall not be crossed, and the authority of the national security law shall not be challenged. Hong Kong’s actions to safeguard national security and the rule of law are legitimate and necessary, and brook no foreign interference. No pressure can shake China’s strong determination and firm will to fully and faithfully implement the national security law and ensure the sustained success of “one country, two systems”. It is futile for some members of the European Parliament to repeatedly wield the “sanctions stick” and threaten to pressure China and the HKSAR. We urge these people to clearly recognize the historical trend, distinguish right from wrong, abide by international law and the basic norms governing international relations, stop distorting and discrediting the national security law, and stop interfering in Hong Kong affairs and China’s internal affairs under any pretext.
