The spokesperson for the Commissioner’s Office of the Chinese Foreign Ministry in the HKSAR strongly disapproved and firmly rejected the statement made by some US senators on the 26th anniversary of Hong Kong’s return to the motherland and the third anniversary of the implementation of the National Security Law for the HKSAR, and the debate in the British House of Commons on the third anniversary of the national security law, which smeared the national security law, denigrated the successful practice of “one country, two systems” in Hong Kong, tried to whitewash anti-China forces in Hong Kong, and seriously trampled on international law and basic norms governing international relations. 

The spokesperson said that since the implementation of the national security law, the rule of law and business environment in Hong Kong have been improved, the society more stable and united. Hong Kong is moving towards greater stability and prosperity, and opens a new chapter in good governance and harmony. Some recent opinion polls show that more than 80% of the Hong Kong people think that the national security situation in Hong Kong has been “greatly improved” or “improved”. A survey conducted by the American Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong shows that more than 70% of its members have full confidence in the rule of law in Hong Kong. Facts have proved that the national security law is effectively protects Hong Kong’s prosperity and stability. Some US and UK politicians ignored the basic facts, maliciously talked down the bright future of Hong Kong, and wantonly slandered the rule of law in Hong Kong. Their political manipulation fully exposed their sinister intentions of “using Hong Kong to contain China”.

The spokesperson pointed out that Hong Kong is a society governed by the rule of law where laws must be observed and lawbreakers held accountable. The fact of Jimmy Lai’s collusion with external forces to endanger national security is clear. Hong Kong police’s arrest and Hong Kong courts’ trial of him fully complies with laws and brook no foreign interference. Some US and UK politicians pointed a finger at the SAR’s law-based administration, and attempted to whitewash anti-China elements in Hong Kong who endanger China’s national security and damage Hong Kong’s interests. Their intention of disrupting Hong Kong has been laid bare. Those anti-China politicians turned a blind eye to domestic problems in the US and the UK, and are obsessed with lecturing others and showing ostensible caring for Hong Kong suspects. Their double standard and hypocrisy has been fully exposed!

The spokesperson stressed that the Chinese government is unswervingly determined to safeguard national sovereignty, security, and development interests, to fully and faithfully implement the principle of “one country, two systems”, and to implement the national security law and consolidate the national security foundation. We urge relevant US and UK politicians to abide by the principles of international law and the basic norms governing international relations, stop grandstanding political shows, and stop interfering in Hong Kong affairs and China’s internal affairs under any pretext.
