Commissioner’s Office: Chinese people will not back down in the face of threatening of sanctions and “using Hong Kong to contain China” will be a self-humiliating trick

The spokesperson for the Commissioner’s Office of the Chinese Foreign Ministry in the HKSAR strongly rejected and deplored a report released by the Congressional-Executive Commission on China, which smeared the National Security Law for the HKSAR and Hong Kong’s judicial system, and clamored for sanctioning national security judges.

The spokesperson said that the independent exercise of judicial power by the judiciary, judges and judicial officers is not only a cornerstone of the global rule of law, but also a hallmark of Hong Kong’s rule of law. Thanks to the national security law, Hong Kong’s rule of law and justice has been upheld, and lawful rights and freedoms of Hong Kong people better protected. The judiciary and judges of the SAR have always been handling cases impartially and independently in accordance with the provisions of laws, their statutory functions and legal procedures, which brooks no foreign finger-pointing.

The spokesperson pointed out that in the 19th century, the feudal society of Europe could use imperial power and even religious power to suppress and humiliate judges, but in modern times, no country is in a position to call for sanctioning or punishing judges of others. Some US politicians claim to respect the rule of law and judicial independence, but in fact they trample on legal justice and engage in political intimidation by threatening sanctions and supporting anti-China forces in Hong Kong. It only exposes their collusion with anti-China elements and their intention of “using Hong Kong to contain China”.

The spokesperson stressed that Hong Kong is part of China, not a political show stage for a few foreign forces who want to disrupt the city. The Chinese people will never back down in the face of any sanctions or pressure. Nothing could change the firm determination of the Chinese side to safeguard the prosperity and stability of Hong Kong and ensure the sustained success of “one country, two systems”. Foreign intimidation will only make the Chinese people even more united and all foreign interference will only fall flat!
