Commissioner’s Office urges the UK to stop interfering in Hong Kong affairs through the BNO scheme

The spokesperson for the Commissioner’s Office of the Chinese Foreign Ministry in the HKSAR strongly disapproved and firmly rejected the extension of the British National Overseas (BNO) visa scheme by changing the immigration rules, which seriously violated international law and basic norms governing international relations, and interfered in Hong Kong affairs and China’s internal affairs.

The spokesperson said that “one without credibility goes nowhere”. In defiance of China’s firm opposition and counter-measures, the British side yet again brazenly violated the promise it made to China by using the BNO scheme to undermine Hong Kong and defame the HKSAR Government, which only once again betrays the unhealthy sullenness of the UK when it sees Hong Kong back on track and in order, and its act of treachery will not do itself any good.

The spokesperson pointed out that the UK, by extending eligibility of the BNO visa, is not to “stand with Hong Kong people”, but to harbor its hidden agenda, such as deflecting attention away from problems at home, playing political games, and seeking economic interests, which will make more Hong Kong people “second-class citizens” in a “immigration trap”. The political manipulation can not pull the wool over people’s eyes, but will only shoot the UK itself in the foot!

The spokesperson said that with the strong support of the Central Government, Hong Kong has moved from chaos to stability and is on its way to prosperity with unlimited opportunities in sight. The new-term HKSAR Government is leading all social sectors to open a new chapter of effective governance. Hong Kong people are full of confidence in the practice of “one country, two systems” and in the bright future of the city. No tricks of external forces can damage Hong Kong’s good governance, nor can they stop the steady implementation of “one country, two systems”. We urge the British side to recognize the reality, refrain from wrongdoings, abide by international law and the basic norms of international relations, wake up from its colonial nostalgia, and immediately stop meddling in Hong Kong affairs in the BNO guise.
