Commissioner’s Office: political show of certain foreign missions in Hong Kong is contrary to will of people and fanning flames is doomed to failure

The spokesperson of the Commissioner’s Office of the Chinese Foreign Ministry in the HKSAR strongly condemned and firmly rejected the political tricks of a few foreign missions in Hong Kong, including consulates general of the US, the UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the EU Office regardless of China’s concerns and their interference in Hong Kong affairs and China’s internal affairs by playing up political issues. We urge relevant missions in Hong Kong to stop the botched political performances based on ideological differences.

The spokesperson said that under the national security law and the new electoral system, Hong Kong has moved from chaos to stability and is marking on a new journey of prosperity and sound governance. Seeking long-term stability and development has become the mainstream public opinion in Hong Kong. However, a few foreign missions in Hong Kong, running counter to the historical trend, have turned a blind eye to the bright future of Hong Kong’s development and the aspirations of the people, ignored China’s concerns and insisted on provocations. Under the pretexts of “human rights” and “freedom”, they side with a very small number of anti-China forces in Hong Kong, and try every possible means to slander China and Hong Kong. Their acts seriously violate the principles of international law and the basic norms governing international relations, such as non-interference in others’ internal affairs, and the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations. The relevant foreign missions in Hong Kong must make serious self-reflection.

The spokesperson stressed that China and Hong Kong enjoy bright prospects. All members of the international community are stakeholders of Hong Kong’s prosperity and stability, and anyone or any force who wants to put on a show of “biting the hand that feeds them” in Hong Kong will shoot themselves in the foot. No slander can stop the sustained implementation of “one country, two systems” or the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. We urge external forces to recognize the situation, cease and desist, and stop playing with fire.
