Commissioner’s Office urges politicians in the US and other Western countries to ditch political tricks
2022-06-04 13:32

The spokesperson of the Commissioner’s Office of the Chinese Foreign Ministry in the HKSAR firmly rejected and strongly condemned the statements released before June 4 by US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, and some US Congress agencies. Their political show interfered in China’s internal affairs under the guise of human rights and freedom, and smeared Hong Kong’s human rights and rule of law, in an attempt to incite hostility and confrontation and tarnish China’s image. We urge the politicians to make self-reflection and do away with political tricks.

The spokesperson said that today’s China is marching on a new journey towards the second centenary goal of building a modern socialist country in all respects. Today’s Hong Kong is further transitioning from chaos to stability and opening a new chapter of sound governance. No hysteria and political performance of any external forces can stop the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation or change the bright prospects of Hong Kong’s prosperity and development. A few Western countries still try to use the political incident that happened 3 decades ago for ideological infiltration and peaceful evolution against China. The move is doomed to be a complete failure given the current historical trend and the development of the Chinese nation.

The spokesperson pointed out that democratic systems and practices in some western countries are fraught with deep-seated problems. In these countries, money politics has been a new normal, political polarization has intensified, and freedom of speech exists in name only. The US has an awful human rights track record and appalling governance deficiencies—the death of George Floyd, frequent school shootings, the Capitol Hill riot, and over one million Covid-19 fatalities, to name a few. The US, the self-claimed “beacon of human rights”, fails to protect the basic right to life of its own citizens, and has no right to point a finger at China, a country that puts people front and center, or slander Hong Kong, a city that upholds democracy and the rule of law.

The spokesperson stressed that Chinese people do not provoke, and will not flinch from provocations either. We have sufficient strengths, willpower and measures to resolutely safeguard China’s sovereignty, security and development interests. The historical process of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation is unstoppable, and the historical trend of Hong Kong moving towards prosperity and effective governance is irreversible. We urge the small number of American politicians to recognize the situation, earnestly respect China’s sovereignty, abide by the principles of international law and the basic norms governing international relations, change course immediately, and stop interfering in China’s internal affairs and Hong Kong affairs. Acts of intervention and sabotage will fall flat time and again no matter how hard they try, and the 1.4 billion Chinese people will stand up against them.
