Commissioner’s Office: UK playing judge card will prove a flop
2022-03-31 09:30

The spokesperson of the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China in the HKSAR strongly disapproved and firmly rejected the so-called “withdrawal” of serving UK judges from the Hong Kong Court of Final Appeal.  The UK, through such a trick, smeared the National Security Law for the HKSAR and its rule of law, and interfered in Hong Kong affairs.

The spokesperson pointed out that national security legislation is a global practice. The National Security Law for the HKSAR formulated and promulgated by the Chinese Government has effectively plugged the legal loopholes in defending national security in the SAR, held accountable a small group of criminals engaged in activities endangering national security, and fully protected the freedoms and rights of the overwhelming majority of Hong Kong people. Facts have proved that the Law has safeguarded national security, social stability and tranquility, and Hong Kong’s development was brought back on track under the Law.

The spokesperson said that since Hong Kong’s return to the motherland, “one country, two systems” and the Basic Law have been fully and faithfully implemented, the common law system of Hong Kong maintained, and the rule of law improved under “one country, two systems”. However, flouting the successful practice of “one country, two systems” and the rule of law in Hong Kong, the UK attempted to denigrate the Chinese Government’s policies towards Hong Kong and discredit the development of its rule of law by playing the “foreign judge” card. This uncovers the sinister intention of the UK to undermine “one country, two systems” and unsettle the rule of law in Hong Kong.

The spokesperson stressed that Hong Kong is part of China governed by the rule of law. No external intervention can shake the legal foundation in Hong Kong or the confidence of the international community in the rule of law in the city, nor can it hamper the determination of the Chinese side to firmly safeguard “one country, two systems” and our national security. The historical trend of Hong Kong moving from chaos to stability and prosperity is unstoppable. We urge the British side to recognize the reality, put itself in the right position, and stop the political grandstanding.
